VMware NSX Configuration Part 1

I will be demonstrating following configuration tasks in this post

  • Create Logical Switch “Transit Logical Switch”
  • Deploy Logical Router Appliance with Uplink Interface attached with Transit Logical Switch
  • Deploy Edge Service Gateway Appliance with Internal Interface attached with Transit Logical Switch

Create Logical Switch

Navigate to Logical Switches under Networking & Security via vSphere Web Client
Click on the + sign to create New Logical Switch

Deploy Logical Router

Navigate to NSX Edges under Networking & Security via vSphere Web Client
Click on the + sign to deploy new Logical Router

Please make sure to check "Enable SSH"

Specify the required Details  such as Resource Pool(Cluster) & Datastore

Select the HA Interface as the Transit Logical Switch which we created earlier. When we create uplink it will be on the same link
We will be configure Default Gateway later when we will deploy Edge Services Gateway . Please ensure to "Uncheck- Configure Default Gateway"

Deploy Edge Services Gateway

Navigate to NSX Edges under Networking & Security via vSphere Web Client.
Click on the + sign to deploy new Edge Services Gateway. You may have already noticed wizard is the same however options differ for Logical Router and Edge Services Gateway

Please ensure to check "Enable SSH"
I have chosen Large as the Appliance Size which will be 2 vCPU , 1 GB RAM and 1GB HDD approx
Specify the required Details  such as Resource Pool(Cluster) & Datastore
For now we will only add Internal Interface and it will be connected to same Logical Switch as the Logical router i.e. Lab_Transit_Logical_Switch

As this is Internal interface we will not Configure Default Gateway. When we will configure Uplink Interface that’s when we will specify Gateway

In Next Blog I will do showing following
  • Configure Uplink Interface attached to VLAN based Port Group
  • Configure Default Gateway in Logical Router as IP of Edge Services Gateway
  • Configure OSPF on Logical Router with Area ID 101
  • Configure OSPF on Edge Services Gateway with Area ID 101
